![]() This will give you enough screw in the wall and still a good hold on the wood. Then you’ll be able to drive the screw deeper into the 120mm wood, you might even get the head a good inch into it. Then drill a clearance hole all the way thought the 120mm timber (same diameter as the screw shank). Usually you’ll want the top of the plug to be 8 to 15mm deep (to prevent the front face of the brick overloading and breaking out). If the above is pants, then stick with the 150mm screws, but get the smallest gauge you can 10 or 12g if possible and drill into the brick 50 to 60mm and knock the plug almost all the way in. If you’re covering up the wood with say plasterboard you could also consider using little brackets up to 50mm x 50mm for example on the side of the wood and then into the wall with 2″ screws.Īaaand finally. Then you can use a normal 100mm screw half in the wood and half in the wall perfect (but only if the 20mm hole doesn’t cause issues). Using a 20mm (or thereabouts)bit, drill a 70mm deep hole in the front of the timber to create a ‘pocket’ and then a 5mm hole the rest of the way. There are two other ways to consider, but it depends if you’re covering up the frame? The most obvious way is to reduce the thickness by drilling a bigger hole half way through the timber with a flat or spade bit. To be honest, you’ll struggle a little, trying to go through that much thickness and then only into the wall a small amount. Let me know if you still have any questions. ![]() Hope that helps you figure out how to use plastic wall plugs and screws on plastered walls…. If you want to learn more about screws and plugs check out this post: Screws Explained… Put the kettle on or head to the fridge depending on the time of day….Working this way ensures the plug is exactly the right depth into the wall and the screw will go all the way to the end of the wall plug when pulled up tight.Tighten up the screw, being careful not to push for the first few turns or you might push the plug in deeper (not good).Using a small hammer tap the screw to push the plug through the plaster and into the wall itself and stop when the length of screw sticking out equals the length of the wall plug.Sometimes the above step is easier if you push the screw all the way through the item and then you’ll easily get the pointy end of the screw into the plug, sliding the item down the screw until it meets the wall.Position the item to be fixed over the hole and put the screw through it and into the plug, twisting the screw a tiny bit by hand till it bites.Push or tap your rawlplugs into your holes, flush with the plaster.Vacuum out the hole if you want to be really proper, mostly not necessary or done however….Carefully drill your holes, starting off slowly (possibly with the hammer action off) until the drill bit forms a shallow hole (see pic above for depth), speed up and hammer back on to finish the hole.Mark out all your holes using a spirit level and/or tape measure.Quick ‘n’ dirty sketch of ‘textbook’ installation of Rawlplugs…. Wall plugs work best when their WHOLE LENGTH is fully inside the walls main building material, thus relieving the plaster and the front face of the walling material from stress. Also, the front part of the brick is not able to take much load either without risking a ‘fisheye’ breakout under load. So, doing the maths and taking the thickness of the plaster away from the length of the plug you’ll figure out that not much of the plug is actually going into the brick/block/concrete if you leave them flush with the plaster. ![]() Most wall plugs are only 1 1/4″ to 1 1/2″ (32 to 38mm) long and most plaster on walls is between 1/2 (12.5mm) to 3/4 (19mm) or so thick. Friction then takes care of holding everything in place for all eternity handy stuff friction… and it’s free! Simply put, when you put a screw into a plastic wall plug (or an old fashioned wooden plug for that matter) it acts as a wedge, pushing the two halves of the plug apart and filling the hole very tightly. Why? Because the way a wall plug works and holds in place is by expanding in a radially outwards fashion. Sure, if the wall is plastered with hard cement render and thin skimming coats, you might get away with some light to medium loads, but generally the plastic plug needs to be pushed into the wall itself so it’s entire length is into a brick, a block or concrete etc. Plaster just will not do, because it has minimal holding power. Wall plugs need brick, block or concrete to hold well. ![]() Definition: to quickly move in the other direction to avoid something.Sentence: An oblique angle in math often refers to an obtuse angle. ![]() I got enough of a taste of this learning on my own in college to keep going with it, and in what feels like a blink of an eye, I’m actually a fairly experienced software engineer now.Įven though I’ve been coding since college, I held myself back for a long time because I wasn’t willing to embrace the identity of a “programmer.” I thought I didn’t deserve it. When you can combine the idea of what you want to build with the ability to design and build it in the same brain, special things can happen. Nothing-not even writing-is satisfying in quite the same way. I get a special thrill from dreaming up ideas and making them come to life. The truth is that programming involves a lot of complexity, and it’s impossible to learn overnight, but it’s a lot of fun, too. Wasn’t there some way of avoiding code? I would start to learn a bit but then get easily discouraged every time I hit a rough patch or got stuck I was worried I was wasting my time, and it would take too long for me to ever be a “real” programmer. The only thing that mattered to me was building cool software that people could use. I hated my math and formal logic classes, and staring at a screen of code was intimidating. Plus, I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to be one. I was not a computer science major in college, and I thought it was “too late” for me to become a programmer. I tried for years to avoid it but eventually gave in-and it was the best career decision I ever made. Here’s the hard part: to do it my way, you have to learn how to code. ![]() This method has advantages and disadvantages, but it’s only worth it if you find it intrinsically satisfying to build things yourself. It’s an extremely hands-on, DIY way of product building. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if that’s your vibe, my approach probably won’t work for you. Instead, it’s a means to some other end, like building a valuable business or earning a lucrative salary. They don’t see it as a medium of creative expression. It took me a while to realize this, but most people in software don’t care inherently about software. If you’re attracted to the idea of building things by hand that people might love and find useful, and doing so with a sense of craft and love, then my way of doing things might be a good fit for you. Sure, there was the possibility of making money, but more importantly, building software felt like the perfect creative medium for me. How (and why) I build productsĪt some point in college I learned about internet startups by reading Getting Real from Basecamp, and Paul Graham’s essays. Next week’s follow-up will cover the rest. This part will start with a high-level overview of how they all fit together, then delve into the first three components. There is a lot to cover, so this is the first of a two-part series. There are nine components to my approach: My focus now is to get really good at going from 1 to 100 and beyond, but before I do, I wanted to stop and appreciate the 0 to 1 game and write up everything I learned about how to play it. And last month I launched probably the best v1 product I ever built: Lex. Since then I’ve worked on lots of products: some big successes ( Substack), others more low-key successes but still cool in their own way ( Chompers, an Alexa skill from Gimlet Media that helps kids brush their teeth, and won a Cannes Lion), and some that never really broke out but a couple thousand people love and still use every week ( Wordie Bird, a word game). A year before that, I built a fun way to learn to code called Scratchpad that got acquired by General Assembly, and then built another product for GA that still exists today and has been used by hundreds of thousands of people, called Dash. ![]() Quick braggy bio: Nine years ago, I designed and programmed the first version of Product Hunt. There’s a lot that I’m not good at, but I’m pretty good at going from zero to one. If I had to name my signature move at this point in my career, it would probably be the way I approach building new software products. And then using this traction to own demand in their industries” ( according to Kevin Kwok).įor Reese Witherspoon the signature move is to play a strong yet vulnerable protagonist going through a transformative moment in life.
